What is the Primrose Square Gardens co-design project?

The aim of the project is to work alongside local children and young people and the wider community to improve Primrose Square gardens for everybody.

This would not be a full redevelopment. Instead, the project will enhance what already works well – introducing carefully designed new features whilst maintaining the character of the space.

The project is not guaranteed to happen – it is dependent on consultation findings and securing the required funding.

Who is leading the project?

• Build Up – expert youth construction charity, who have an extensive track record of working with children and young people on co-design projects in various parts of Hackney, as well as across London.
• Hackney Quest – local youth charity (based off Well St) who have been in the neighbourhood for 38 years supporting children, young people and the wider community.
• Hackney Council – owners and managers of the site.
• St John of Jerusalem Primary School – supporters of the project, whose students will be heavily involved in the co-design process.

What is the purpose of this consultation?

The aims of this initial consultation are to:

• Understand whether local people support the idea of improving the space (with careful consideration to what already works well about the space)
• Gather initial ideas for how the space could be improved
• Gather perspectives on what should not be changed about the space

The findings of the consultation may support funding applications. If the project goes ahead, the findings will also shape the design ‘brief’ given to the children and young people participating in the project, so that their ideas for the space are informed by local people’s views on the site.
