In spring 2023 Build Up were back with the young people from the Hughes Field Estate in order to develop a neglected piece of ground outside of the housing block into a new community garden space.

The young people came up with lots of ideas for the space, which included a planter for plants that smelt nice and that were colourful. They wanted someone they could play and they wanted somewhere where they could hang out.

The final design included a very large picnic table for families to sit at, a planter with herbs for cooking, a place for a barbecue to sit safely on gravel, a new four square on the tarmac for games and a woodland play area under a large tree.

The young people came up with the design it in spring, and then were involved in the build over the summer. The space is called the Peace Garden and has been very well used by many members of the community since including the young people that built it.
