Communication Space

Haringey Play Association, Haringey, 2018

In summer 2018, Build Up ran its first project aimed at girls and young women in partnership with Haringey Play Association’s SisterHood group. In response to an absence of young female views in major local developments, 25 young women worked with architects, rappers and filmmakers to explore their experiences growing up in this rapidly changing part of London.

The playground, where the project was based, was recognised as the only safe space in the local area. The team proposed and built a designated Communication Space at the site; here, different generations of local people could come together and engage in conversations about issues impacting them.

This project was funded through Comic Relief and the Big Lottery Fund, as part of the #iwill fund, an initiative of the Big Lottery Fund, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and Step up to Serve, funded by the Big Lottery Fund and the Cabinet Office.
